== Properties ==
Trellium is a silvery metal with a red cast to it, and dark red spots similar to rust.{{book ref|mb5|21}}{{book ref|mb5|epilogue}} Like other God Metals, it displays many unusual properties. It is notable for repelling other forms of [[Investiture]], with a force proportional to how close it is to the source of Investiture.{{book ref|mb7|15}} This causes it to try and roll away when in the proximity of harmonium, Hemalurgic spikes or an Allomancer burning metals.

=== Chemical Properties ===
The hardness of the metal is just above a nine, as it is scratched by diamond, but barely marks corundum. It is also very brittle. It has an extraordinarily high melting point, above 3,000 degrees. When heated, it lets off the full visual spectrum of light (i.e. it appears perfectly white), with the red portion of the spectrum going off the spectrometric scale.{{book ref|mb7|13}}

=== Interactions with Harmonium ===
When an electric current is passed through [[harmonium]], the metal softens and its Investiture begins to polarize, becoming more atium-like on one end and more lerasium-like on the other.{{book ref|mb7|15}} If trellium is inserted between the two poles, a violent reaction occurs, as some of the harmonium's Investiture or matter is converted into pure energy.{{book ref|mb7|17}} While this technique fails to divide the harmonium, the resultant blast is extremely powerful; converting less than half a gram of harmonium into energy is capable of destroying a thick safe and the fortified room around it.{{book ref|mb7|17}} This interaction can be used to create powerful bombs; however, as these weapons rely upon a novel energy release mechanism, not even Autonomy or [[Harmony]] fully understand their true destructive potential.{{book ref|mb7|69}} 

A separate interaction, detonating harmonium against trellium, produces small amounts of [[lerasium]] and [[atium]].{{book ref|mb7|71}}{{book ref|mb7|epilogue|4}} Harmony uses this effect to manufacture atium.

== Hemalurgic Use ==
Trellium can steal Allomantic and Feruchemical abilities and grant them to kandra.{{book ref|mb5|epilogue}} Presumably its Hemalurgic ability is similar to that of [[atium]], allowing the transfer of any ability with somewhat variable success depending on the binding point. Using it as a [[Hemalurgy|Hemalurgic]] spike can keep the user hidden from [[Harmony]].{{wob ref|6300}}{{wob ref|307}} This has a limited effect, however, and any more than a single spike will make the user visible to the Shard. It is an inherent property of the metal, and not a Hemalurgic attribute, that hides the user.{{wob ref|6300}} 

Using trellium as a spike allows users to communicate with others. They can speak to others who have a Hemalurgic spike, but they cannot hear their thoughts.{{book ref|mb5|9}}{{book ref|mb5|10}} They can also create a Connection with Autonomy's avatars, allowing them to communicate and feel each other's presence.{{book ref|mb7|19}}{{book ref|mb7|66}} Some individuals spiked with trellium exhibit glowing red eyes at times.{{book ref|mb7|55}} This behavior is inconsistent; [[Granks]]'s eyes start faintly glowing during his fight with Marasi, then the glow becomes vivid when he is near death. The glow fades once Marasi removes his trellium spike and he dies.{{book ref|mb7|6}} Furthermore, Autonomy herself can act and speak through an individual spiked by a trellium spike.{{book ref|mb7|55}}{{book ref|mb7|epilogue|1}}

== Theories ==

It is possible that this is the metal referred to by [[Miles Hundredlives]] in his last words as "the final metal."

Trellium is the God Metal, or an alloy of the God Metal, of a Shard that was known when it first appeared.{{wob ref|6261}}{{wob ref|13226}} It cannot be of Ruin or Preservation, as Harmony does not recognize the metal;{{book ref|mb5|epilogue}} it also cannot be of [[Ambition]], [[Invention]], [[Mercy]], [[Valor]], or [[Whimsy]], as they were unknown when it first appeared;{{wob ref|6261}} and it has been confirmed to not be of [[Endowment]].{{wob ref|4389}} It is almost certainly not the God Metal (or an alloy thereof) of [[Devotion]], [[Dominion]], or [[Honor]] as they are all [[Splinter]]ed,{{au ref|Roshar}} which leaves [[Autonomy]], [[Cultivation]], and [[Odium]] as the remaining possibilities. Cultivation has exhibited few signs of interest in affairs beyond [[Roshar]] and it seems unlikely that she was responsible for the metal.

Though Odium's Intent seems to drive him towards conflict with the other Shards,{{au ref|Roshar}}{{epigraph ref|sa4|40}} it is unlikely that he is responsible for trellium. Odium's God Metal, [[raysium]], is bright gold,{{book ref|sa4|121}} which does not match the appearance of trellium;{{book ref|mb5|epilogue}} though this does not rule out the possibility that trellium is an alloy of raysium. Additionally, he might be reluctant to commit the Investiture required to create trellium, especially while he is waging the [[True Desolation]] on Roshar&mdash;[[Rayse]] has always planned to avoid Investing in a planet,{{wob ref|227}} though it is unclear whether Odium's new Vessel, [[Taravangian]], has similar feelings. Furthermore, Harmony distinctly mentions Odium in [[Letters#The Sixth Letter|his second letter]] to [[Hoid]] but shares that he is worried that a Shard or Shards he cannot identify are encroaching on Scadrial,{{epigraph ref|sa4|28}} suggesting that Trell is not Odium or any of the other Shards Harmony is aware of.

By process of elimination, this suggests that trellium is of Autonomy. Notably, Autonomy is known among cosmere scholars as a Shard that often intervenes on other planets{{au ref|Taldain}} and has avatars on [[First of the Sun]] and [[Obrodai]];{{wob ref|8902}}{{epigraph ref|sa3|50}} [[Trell (Trellism)|Trell]] may be an avatar of Autonomy manifesting on Scadrial.

* In the ''[[Alloy of Law: Masks of the Past]]'' adventure game supplement, trellium allows kandra to use the Allomantic or Feruchemical abilities of another Hemalurgic spike they are spiked with. They also cannot be controlled by Harmony or brass Allomancy, but they also lose the non-sapience half of their blessing.
