The [[Unkalaki]] tell the story of how they came into the Peaks. They say they were hunted by men who were scared of them. As they tried to escape, their leader the [[tana’kai]] asked for help to the gods. They asked each individually (the gods of trees, water and mountains) only the third responded asking them to find a way to make it work. Their tana’kai then asked each god again for trees, water and warmth and the mountain god was pleased, pulling down their peaks placing in warm water and trees; giving the [[Unkalaki]] a home. The story of how the Unkalaki came to live in the Peaks is only known through legend. The Unkalaki are known to be hybrids of [[singers]] and humans.{{wob ref|930}} According to Unkalaki tradition, they became pariahs in Roshar due to their fighting prowess and had to appeal to the gods to create a new place for them to live.{{book ref|sa2|46}}
 
Over time, the Unkalaki were reintroduced to Rosharan society; at the end of the [[Era of Solitude]] it was not uncommon to encounter a Horneater in the larger cities of Jah Keved and Alethkar, and many people in the area had partially red hair that indicated some measure of Horneater blood.{{book ref|sa2|5}}

The Voidspren then occupied the area, sailing warships and demanding tribute. Although the Unkalaki technically live within the borders of Jah Keved, they are essentially treated as a sovereign nation with the peaks as their territory; they are not referred to as Veden.{{book ref|sa1|14}} They are not mentioned as participants in any of the many skirmishes between Jah Keved and Alethkar. The residents of different peaks occasionally attack each other, but this is rare.{{book ref|sa3|37}} They desperately want to win [[Shardblade]]s and [[Shardplate]] but have not been able to do so until [[Cord]] claims a set of Plate during the [[expedition to Akinah]].{{book ref|sa3.5|16}}
