The Misted Mountains border several nations during the [[Era of Solitude]], including Shinovar, [[Alm]], [[Yezier]], [[Desh]], [[Babatharnam]], [[Rira (country)|Rira]], and [[Iri]].{{file ref|Words of Radiance endpaper.jpg|Map of Roshar}}
They serve as a windbreak for the whole nation of Shinovar, weakening the [[highstorm]]s enough to protect the country and its inhabitants from the destructive power of the storms.{{book ref|twok|i|4}} Due to this effect, the flora and fauna of Shinovar are not defined by surviving the highstorms, so they are vastly different from the rest of Roshar.
