The Windrunners arewere [[Surgebinder]]s who useused the [[Surge]]s of Adhesion and Gravitation, and they are associated with the sapphire [[polestone]]. They formabsorbed [[Stormlight]] from gems by inhalation. They formed a [[Nahel Bond]] with [[honorspren]]. The combination of Adhesion and Gravitation resultsresulted in the three [[#Abilities|Lashings]]. [[Szeth]] was able to use the three Lashings by way of an [[Honorblade]], assumed to have belonged to [[Jezrien]], the order's patron. The glow of the Windrunners' [[Shardplate]] iswas blue.

The Windrunners use the Surges of '''Adhesion''' and '''Gravitation'''. The combination of these two Surges resulted in the three Lashings.{{book ref|sa1|prologue}}{{book ref|sa1|part=ars}} Someone wearing Shardplate is immune to Lashings, but any objects that they are touching '''can''' be affected.{{book ref|twok|i|9}} Using a combination of Adhesion and Gravitation, a Windrunner could theoretically exit orbit.{{wob ref|5806}} They have been noted as having traveled at at least 200 mph.{{book ref|sa4|111}}{{ref|text=However, even with a triple Lashing and a continuous source of Stormlight that may be nearly their practical limit against wind resistance.{{book ref|sa4|9}}|group=note}}

Using the Full Lashing, a Surgebinder can pool Stormlight into an area. All objects that subsequently touch this area will be bonded to the object, sticking them there and hindering their movement. The bond ends when the Stormlight runs out.{{book ref|sa4|part=ars}}

By using the Reverse Lashing, a Surgebinder can increase the gravitational pull of an object, allowing the infused object to pull nearby objects toward it. The Surgebinder must maintain contact with the object to Reverse Lash it.{{book ref|sa4|part=ars}} Items that are airborne are pulled more strongly towards the infused object.

Due to a combination of their two surges, Windrunners have new, secondary effects, known as the [[Resonance]].{{wob ref|3625}} The Windrunners' Resonance is strength of squires,{{wob ref|6740}}{{wob ref|915}} which allows them to have many more squires than other Orders. After Kaladin swore the third oath, many of the bridgemen who worked under him were suddenly able to breathe Stormlight and heal.{{book ref|sa2|87}} ALater, squireKaladin cantrains performthe theirbridgemen ownin sucking in Stormlight and using Lashings. However, buttheir abilities are only present when their WindrunnerKaladin is nearby. Squires[[Sigzil]] cannoted that they could use Stormlight effectively within thirty miles of their WindrunnerKaladin, and their maximum distance was fifty miles. Squires will lose access to their powers in an hour or two after the Windrunner leaves.{{book ref|sa3|55}}

As a result of both their past as bridge crews in the army of [[Torol Sadeas]] and Kaladin's military training, the refounded order of Windrunners is well organized and maintains a strong military structure.{{book ref|sa3|35}}{{book ref|sa3|121}} They have ranks for squires, such as CP4 (Commission Placement 4), as they decided to have ranks that someone could earn while advancing as a squire. They felt it would be good to promote squires to different ranks.{{wob ref|14098}} The Windrunners' resonance has led many of the bridgemen, as well as some others, to become squires,{{book ref|sa3|46}}{{book ref|sa3|122}} making the Windrunners one of, if not the, most numerous of the modern orders. About a year after the [[Battle of Thaylen Field]], the order had roughly three hundred Windrunners, with about fifty full Windrunners.{{book ref|sa4|5}}
