Adien is from [[Kae]], born autistic.{{wob ref|2209}} Throughout his childhood, Adien moves in an awkward, stiff, uncontrolled manner. He constantly mumbles numbers (e.g., distances to landmarks in steps){{book ref|Elantris|5}} and words (e.g., "Elantris"){{book ref|Elantris|8}} to himself. Adien has a natural way with numbers, instinctively knowing the distance in strides between any two locations.{{book ref|Elantris|62}}
When Sarene meets him, Adien is a thin-faced boy in his late teens.{{book ref|Elantris|5}} After [[Raoden]] heals Elantris, Adien gives him the exact distance to [[Teod]] so that Raoden can effectively use [[Aon#Tia|Aon Tia]] to rescue Sarene.
