Aons are a writing system used by the Aonic peoples of Arelon and Teod on Sel. They are logographic, meaning they represent words and meanings, as opposed to an alphabet which represents sounds. Instead of being an invented system like most scripts, the Aons already existed and were discovered by an ancient Elantrian through trial and error.2173

Aons also serve as the focus for the magic system AonDor used by Elantrians. This, presumably, served as the impetus for the discovering of new Aons.

* In addition to Aons, there is also an Aonic Alphabet, in which each letter is a single sound, that is used for sounds that can't be produced from Aons. The Aons themselves are older than this language, as shown by the fact that they're based on the land. This also implies that theThe meaning of Aons in the language is inherent, their meanings are based on both their effects and how they look. 2173 Brandon never fully developed that alphabet, but it is similar to the Korean writing system Hangul.820<!-- previous cite tage here mentioned "a google signing from the Shadows of self tour," but I didn't find anything like that mentioning Hangul -->
*A person taken by the Shaod most likely discovered the language through trial and error, and then associating a meaning and sound for each one based on what each Aon did. 2173
* Aon Ela appears on the cover of the 10th Anniversary leather-bound edition of Elantris.
* In Tress of the Emerald Sea, one of the paintings by Howard Lyon shows Hoid casting Aon Edo, using Aon Daa as a modifier, though this is not stated in the text itself.BattleOfWits.jpg
