Haspers are comprised of two shells{{book ref|sa1|44}} that enclose a slimy interior.{{book ref|sa2|55}} These two shells open and close in rhythm with one another.{{book ref|sa1|64}} Due to this motion, haspers are often compared to tiny mouths that are breathing. At least some varieties of haspers have pearly shells.{{book ref|sa1|64}} They may be related to tiny snails.{{book ref|sa1|44}}
Haspers are creatures that appear to spend most, if not all, of their life totally stationary.{{book ref|sa1|44}}{{book ref|sa1|63}} They grow in clusters,{{book ref|sa1|44}} attached to the side of objects made of stone,{{book ref|sa2|69}} wood,{{book ref|sa1|3}} or on [[shalebark]].{{book ref|sa1|64}} A cluster of haspers can support the weight of a few waterskins.{{book ref|sa1|63}}
