“They were good people you killed. Poor Kaplan. And Marple. And Mallory. ”
Kaplan is a person which Tress mentions as a victim of the attack on the Oot's Dream by the Crow's Song on Lumar. They are likely a fictitious character created by Tress.[1]
Tress told Crow that Kaplan, Marple, and Mallory, ostensibly late crew members of the Oot's Dream, were her family; she did so so that Crow would want her to run away at their port call in Shimmerbay in order to spread the news that the crew of the Crow's Song had killed all the people on the Oot's Dream.[1] This would have both fulfilled Crow's plan to make her crew into deadrunners and given Tress the freedom to find other passage to Kingsport.[2]
