Worried about the return of the [[Voidbringers]], the [[Cryptic]]
When a [[Skybreaker]] acolyte persuaded Shallan's mother that [[Surgebinder]]s had to be killed, she attacked Shallan. Her father tried to intercede to protect his daughter, but was stopped by the man before he could help Shallan. When her mother came after her with the man's fallen knife, Shallan summoned Pattern as a Shardblade in self defence, killing her. His wife's lover subdued, [[Lin]] took the blade from his daughter and locked it in his strongbox. Shallan, in a state of shock, saw a glowing light seep through the cracks of the safe, from what she came to believe was the monster that had been locked away inside.
