Both Preservation and Ruin picked [[Vin]] as one of its unwitting agents many centuries prior, though Ruin attempted to stifle Preservation's influence by piercing child Vin with a [[Hemalurgic]] spike at birth. The first sign of [[Vin]]'s connection to Preservation was when she attempted to fight the Lord Ruler and drew on the mist to fuel her [[Allomancy]].{{book ref|mb1|38}} A year later, she began to hear the beat of the Well as it called for someone to once more take up the power.
