== History ==
Dilaf, a [[Derethi]] [[gragdet]] from [[Fjorden]], was at some point physically transformed to look like a young [[Arelish]] man using the magic of [[Dakhor]].{{book ref|elantris|60}} His intent was to infiltrate [[Arelon]],{{annotationwob ref|Elantris|chapter=63|link=annotation-elantris-chapter-632236}} which is the only remaining nation in [[Opelon]] not under Fjordell control.{{book ref|Elantris|3}} Seala meets Dilaf after his transformation; despite his own distaste for his new body, she finds him incredibly handsome.{{book ref|elantris|60}} Dilaf sets aside his aversion to [[Aonic]] people and they are eventually married.{{annotationwob ref|Elantris|chapter=25|link=annotation-elantris-chapter-252017}}
 
Ten years prior to the [[Reod]], Seala falls ill with a serious palsy,{{book ref|Elantris|25}} and [[Dilaf]] grudgingly takes her to [[Elantris (city)|Elantris]] to be healed despite his distrust of their magic.{{book ref|Elantris|60}} An [[Elantrian]] uses [[Aon#Ien|Aon Ien]] to heal her, but the symbol is drawn incorrectly and it flashes and malfunctions, leaving her 'cursed'.{{book ref|Elantris|25}} Her hair falls out, her skin turns black, and she experiences incredible amounts of pain that never subside, similar to fallen Elantrians after the Reod.{{book ref|Elantris|25}}{{book ref|Elantris|60}} Eventually, the pain is so intense that she effectively becomes [[Hoed]]{{annotationwob ref|Elantris|chapter=60-2|link=annotation-elantris-60-22207}} and commits suicide by jumping from Elantris' walls.{{book ref|Elantris|25}}{{book ref|Elantris|60}} Dilaf finds her still alive and screaming, and he burns her broken body.{{book ref|Elantris|60}} He regrets ever bringing Seala to the Elantrians and wishes they would have let her die.{{book ref|Elantris|60}}
 
== Legacy ==
Seala's death fuels Dilaf's intense hatred of Elantrians{{annotationwob ref|Elantris|chapter=25|link=annotation-elantris-chapter-252017}} and causes him to become mentally unstable.{{annotationwob ref|Elantris|chapter=60-2|link=annotation-elantris-60-22207}} Dilaf believes that the unnamed Elantrian healer knew of his origins and intentionally botched the Aon,{{book ref|Elantris|60}} but this is not confirmed.{{wob ref|3873}} He sees the [[invasion of Arelon]] as vengeance for Seala.{{book ref|Elantris|61}}
