Winterwort had a bitter taste, but it could be used as an anesthetic on patients during surgery.[1] After being crushed to a powder and mixed with oil it could be administered. At one spoonful per ten brickweight of the patient, it would keep a person unconscious for five hours.

Kaladin and Lirin used winterwort on Sani when they attempted to repair her crushed hand.[1]
