== Philosophy ==
The Dustbringers believe that great power requires a strong will to control it, and their oaths are designed to teach them to control their destructive power.{{wob ref|16454}} While their powers can be used to destroy large swaths of land, acting like artillery, they prefer to work in a more controlled and nuanced manner. 

Most Dustbringers are tinkerers who like to take things apart to figure out how they work. They often object to those who only focus on the destructive side of their powers, as they feel that it is impossible to create something without understanding how its pieces work.{{wob ref|13774}} This desire to understand how things work applies to people as well, with them wanting to deeply understand people to know how to incite or avoid certain emotional responses.{{wob ref|16454}} The order also attracts foolhardy-but-brave soldiers who try to control the destructive nature of war to protect innocents.{{wob ref|13774}} They also tend to have the most variety among the Radiant orders.{{wob ref|14995}}

== Philosophy ==
While each order of Radiants contains a variety of personalities within it, those who join the Dustbringers generally subscribe to a philosophy of responsibility and self-mastery.{{wob ref|13774}} The Order believes that the powers they use need to be properly channeled, much as their own desires and wills need proper form and shape. Dustbringers typically object to those who focus only on their destructive sides, as they argue that in order to create, one must understand the pieces of the thing they are trying to make. They don’t see themselves as being about destruction and instead see their nature as being about control, precision, and understanding. They tend to attract tinkerers who like to dig down into the shape and soul of a thing, break it, and see what makes it work. They also attract those who see themselves as containing and controlling terrible destruction so it won't hurt innocents. 

== Ideals of the Dustbringers ==
The Ideals of the Knights Radiant, also known as the [[Immortal Words]], are a set of rules by which the Radiants live. The First Ideal is shared by all of the orders, and is used as a motto for the Knights Radiant as a whole. The four remaining Ideals are unique to each order.{{book ref|sa1|59}} The Ideals of the Order of Dustbringers all focus on responsibility and controlling one's power, and are designed to teach lessons about the nature of power and the responsibility that comes with it. Before the [[Day of Recreance]], many Dustbringers objected to the name of their order, as they felt it was too similar to "[[Voidbringers]]," and encouraged others to instead call them "Releasers,"{{epigraph ref|sa2|36}}{{wob ref|13774}} though most people still referred to them as "Dustbringers".{{wob ref|3607}} This naming preference may have been influenced by their spren, as [[Spark]] apparently passed it on to [[Malata]].{{book ref|sa3|24}} The Dustbringers were often misjudged by people because of the destructive nature of their powers,{{epigraph ref|sa2|36}} and even some of their fellow Knights Radiant felt they were "on the edge of evil" and did not get along with them.{{wob ref|11988}} The Skybreakers, who often made sure the Radiants didn't abuse their power,{{wob ref|13773}} were particularly concerned about the Dustbringers, despite the fact that the two orders had much in common.{{wob ref|11988}}

Historically, the Dustbringers often functioned as sappers, engineers, and strategists for the Knights Radiant.{{wob ref|13774}}{{wob ref|16450}} During the final battle of the [[Last Desolation]], they used their powers to great effect, resulting in burnt plants and corpses and smoldering rock.{{book ref|sa1|part=prelude}} In one of [[Dalinar's visions]], a Dustbringer and several of her squires hunted a [[spren]] that had been corrupted by [[Sja-anat]] and then fought a [[thunderclast]].{{book ref|sa2|4}}

The first known [[ashspren]] to initiate a [[Nahel bond]] since the Recreance is Spark, who bonded Malata. Many of Spark's friends were killed in the Recreance and she claims that her only objectives with the bond are to get revenge and break things; this attitude appears to have played a role in Malata's acceptance of the [[Diagram (group)|Diagram]]'s decision to side with [[Odium]].{{book ref|sa3|107}} It appears that at least a few other ashspren have initiated bonds since Spark did, but it is unclear whether any of them and their Dustbringers will also decide to side with Odium.{{book ref|sa3.5|3}}

[[Dalinar Kholin|Dalinar]]'s coalition may be beginning to suspect that not all Dustbringers are loyal to their cause, as [[Lopen]] asked Ral-na not to talk with the other Dustbringers, so that he could find his own path, and said there were political reasons for that request.{{book ref|sa3.5|3}} Jasnah also suspected them of rebellion.{{book ref|sa4|17}}
