Dalinar asks the Stormfather to transport him down to the rubble at the base of the cliff. The Stormfather is hesitant, saying that the visions were not intended to be seen by somebody standing in the rubble. The visions are illusions, and will not teach Dalinar more if he explores them. Dalinar insists, saying that Honor put the rubble there and it can be learned from. Dalinar sees gouges on the stones as if made from claws. He concludes that Kholinar will not fall to the Everstorm, but to something worse that will come after. The Stormfather agrees. Dalinar is frustrated that the monarchs of the world will not unite with him despite the threat, and worried about rumors of Kholinar's fall. He wonders what he should do to stave off the destruction.

He comes out of the vision with Navani standing nearby. He knows he must unite the world before their enemy destroys it. Dalinar reflects on how much he loves Navani, and how stubborn she is. Navani pledges to help despite their current situation, which is already desperate. A messenger comes and reports that Sadeas had been murdered.

I’m certain some will feel threatened by this record. Some few may feel liberated. Most will simply feel that it should not exist.

Plot Summary

It is six days after Dalinar and all his troops made it to Urithiru to escape from the voidbringers. Dalinar revisits the very first vision he experienced: he stands next to a human form speaking with Honor's voice atop a cliff overlooking a ruined Kholinar. Having become a Knight Radiant by bonding the Stormfather himself, he can enter any of the visions at will and has enough control to not need to be tied down. A final wave of destruction closes the vision, and Dalinar insists on staying to watch it. In the wave of destruction, he sees a golden light and a dark figure with nine shadows. Dalinar is terrified of the figure's eyes, saying that he found something familiar in them. The Stormfather identifies the shadows as the Unmade, the spren of Odium.
