Horneater Peaks
Type Mountains
Region Jah Keved
World Roshar

The Horneater Peaks are a mountain range in the middle of Roshar; near Jah Keved. [1]

Geography and Ecology

They are majestic mountains, densely populated at their tips, with villages clustered near vents that emitted steam or lava.[2] The top of each mountain forms a kind of crater, which is filled with a large lake of warm water. The heat is enough to create a pocket of livable land, despite the altitude. The Unkalaki call these bodies of water Oceans. Each peak has one Ocean. [3]

Environment

The Oceans provide warmth so that the peaks have habitable temperaturas. Their warmth only extends to a point and after that, the place is surrounded by ice fields left by highstorms. [3]

Location

The Horneater Peaks are a mountain range in Jah Keved on Roshar. [3]

Settlements

The Horneater Peaks are inhabited by the Unkalaki. [3]

Notable Features

The Horneater Peaks are Cultivation's Perpendicularity. They have been the “door” into Roshar for several worldhoppers including Hoid and Vivenna. [4] On their southern slopes the chulls breed. The importance of this cycle is documented by Jasnah. {{book ref|sa3|104}

Bathing in its lake is part of the reason the Unkalaki can see spren.[3]

Cultural reference

The Unkalaki tell the story of how they came into the Peaks. They say they were hunted by men who were scared of them. As they tried to escape, their leader the tana’kai asked for help to the gods. They asked each individually (the gods of trees, water and mountains) only the third responded asking them to find a way to make it work. Their tana’kai then asked each god again for trees, water and warmth and the mountain god was pleased, pulling down their peaks placing in warm water and trees; giving the Unkalaki a home. They also claim, the waters are special, that inside there is a connection to Gods. [3]

History

The Horneater Peaks were occupied by the Unkalaki simply called Horneaters by most. They lived there and guarded the perpendicularity.[3]

At some point at some point after the summoning from the Everstorm but before the occupation of Kholinar. The Fused went to the peaks and occupied them. [5]

On its Shadesmar side; Voidspren arrived mysteriously just west of the Nexus of Imagination. Near Marat or Tukar on the congitive realm's side. They have sailed up and seized the perpendicularity. [6]

Voidspren start sailing warships and demanding tribute from any who approach.[6] This blocked all reliable means of travel into Shadesmar, there are accounts of several ships vanishing around the perpendicularity.[7]

Trivia

The Elantrian pool and the Horneater lakes are the same thing.[8]
