Calamity is an inhuman being whose origin is mostly unknown. He is a part of group of similar beings who for some reason want to prove, by experimenting in different universes, that humans always misuse power.{{book ref|calamity|48}} Calamity is born on Earth as a human, and finds life on the planet painful and confusing in comparison to the place where he originated. After ten years of living on Earth, observing mankind, Calamity decides that he has had enough, and starts living in the International Space Station, which he turns to glass.{{book ref|calamity|47}} He uses his limitless abilities to glow brightly, making him appear to be a star from the viewpoint of people on Earth. AtAfter thisa pointyear of being a star, he begins giftingto gift powers to humans,{{book ref|steelheart|prologue}} creating Epics who are corrupted by him as they receive his hatred for the human race.{{book ref|calamity|48}} Shortly afterwards, Calamity sends a clone of himself to Earth.{{cite}} He pretends to be an Assumer Epic who people name Larcener.
