Maya's appearance in [[Shadesmar]] is that of a woman{{book ref|oathbringer|87}}{{book ref|oathbringer|89}}{{book ref|oathbringer|93}} with scratched out eyes{{book ref|oathbringer|87}}{{book ref|oathbringer|93}}, though the appearance of this is similar to a painting with the features scratched out and not simply empty sockets.{{book ref|oathbringer|89}} She also has features that seem to be made of ashen brown cords the thickness of hair,{{book ref|oathbringer|87}} giving the appearance of rough cloth{{book ref|oathbringer|89}}, string{{book ref|sa3|101}} or brown vines{{book ref|sa3|117}}. She is described while attacking as having long nails.{{book ref|sa3|117}} She appears to be a dead cultivationspren who are described as being comprised of vines with crystal hands.{{book ref|sa3|102}}▼

In the [[Physical Realm]] she appears as a Shardblade. The blade itself is shaped like a larger version of a standard longsword and bears some resemblance to the enormous two handed broadswords traditionally wielded by Horneaters. The cutting edge is smooth and sinuous, like an eel, while the back has ridges of crystal.{{book ref|sa2|14}}. When summoned, the mist it forms from is in the shape of vines.{{wob ref|7095}}▼

Not much is known about Maya's personality. Her face is devoid of emotion at all times{{book ref|sa3|101}}{{book ref|sa3|117}} and she mostly communicates via screeching.{{book ref|sa3|89}}{{book ref|sa3|117}} She always follows Adolin unless prevented, as deadeye spren follow or search out their corpses.{{book ref|sa3|101}} However, she did, of her own volition, protect him from a Fused. During the [[Battle of Thaylen Field]], after Adolin talks to her, she tells him her name and even appears in his hand in seven heartbeats instead of the usual ten.{{book ref|sa3|120}} When Adolin gives her to [[Hrdalm]], she sends him a sensation of resigned agreement.{{book ref|sa3|120}} This suggests that "dead" spren are actually just broken. Like Syl said, spren are more like forces, you can't truly kill them, just break them.▼

Adolin often spoke to Maya and imagined that she listened to him. He believed that something that felt like an extension of the soul itself was impossible to wield without feeling as though it too was alive.{{book ref|sa2|14}} This in turn may account for some of the difference in the relationship between Adolin and Mayalaran in regards to other spren.▼

Maya was one of the shards placed on the line in Adolin and Dalinar's dueling campaign to disarm the [[Shardbearer|Shardbearers]] of the [[Highprince|Highprinces]]{{book ref|wor|5}}. The most important duel of these duels being the one against [[Relis]], [[Elit Ruthar|Elit]], [[Abrobadar]] and [[Jakamav]]{{book ref|wor|56}}{{book ref|wor|57}}. She was also present at many battles, including the [[Battle of the Tower]]{{book ref|twok|66}}{{book ref|twok|67}} and the [[Battle of Narak]]{{book ref|wor|81}}{{book ref|wor|82}}{{book ref|wor|83}}{{book ref|wor|84}}.▼

Adolin talked with Maya before he [[Kaladin]], [[Shallan]] and [[Elhokar]] storm [[Kholinar Palace]]. He acknowledged that she was a dead spren and that he was sorry there is nothing he could do to fix that. He thanked her for all the years they've fought together and promised to try and use her only to do good.{{book ref|sa3|83}}▼

Maya and Adolin met for the first time when he crossed over into [[Shadesmar]]{{book ref|sa3|87}}{{book ref|sa3|89}} with [[Shallan]], [[Kaladin]], [[Vivenna]], [[Pattern]] and [[Sylphrena]] from the corrupted [[Oathgate]] in [[Kholinar]].{{book ref|sa3|85}} Pattern informed them all that Maya is quite dead. Usually she trailed after Adolin but otherwise remained motionless{{book ref|sa3|89}}{{book ref|sa3|93}} and to go elsewhere had to be lead by the hand.{{book ref|sa3|102}} ▼
