The '''Roughs''' are the frontier regions just outside the [[Elendel Basin]] on [[Scadrial]]. They are separated from the fertile basin by mountain ranges, and are divided into the '''Northern Roughs''' and the '''Southern Roughs''' (with the [[Irongate River]] as the approximate dividing line).{{map ref|scadrial}}
The ideal conditions in the
Giraffes inhabit the northern roughs, and acacia trees grow there.{{book ref|mb5|prologue}} A political movement once began to make the Roughs a province within the Elendel Basin with political representation. Various settlements are known in the Northern Roughs, very little is known about the Southern Roughs.
[[Waxilium] goes up to the Roughs as a bounty hunter. He kills [[Granite Joe]], and Perrin the Black, two of the most notorious criminals in the Roughs.
