Ulaam is a kandra on Scadrial and later Lumar.[1][2] He traveled to Lumar in response to a letter from Hoid.[3] Upon his arrival, he found Hoid acting oddly due to a curse from the Sorceress. During his time on Lumar, he traveled as a companion of Hoid on the ship the Crow's Song, serving as the ship's doctor.[2] He had been on Lumar for about a year before meeting Tress. [4]

Appearance and Personality

His body while on the Crow's Song is ashen grey-skinned with bloodred eyes, sharp features, and jet black hair[2], consistent with a Bloodsealer from Sel. He wears a sharp, pure black suit with no buttons, which once belonged to Hoid.{book ref|tress|18}} Ulaam, being a kandra freed from the control of Harmony, does not attempt to mimic humans or other animals, resulting in a unique personality, even among others of his kind.[4] He does not have a heart and his skin is cold (both adaptations to reduce the number of calories he consumes).[2] He collects body parts from corpses the crew encounters. Ulaam has a somewhat morbid sense of humor, often offering members of the Crow's Song various body parts from his collection.[5] It is unclear whether he would actually give away organs from his collection, or if he is only messing with people. However, he does at times graft some of these organs onto himself. [6][7][8]

Attributes and Abilities

Ulaam is an excellent doctor. He used salves to treat the injuries of Salay and Fort, which sped up their healing.[9] Hoid states that Ulaam is the best doctor he's ever met. [8] As a kandra, Ulaam is capable of shapeshifting, using his natural physiology to reform his own muscles and to incorporate the organs and parts of other creatures which he has absorbed.[6][7][8] His shape does not have to be humanoid - at one point, he mimicked a two-headed snake.[2] He is also able to quickly digest Verdant aether growths. [7] He is also functionally immortal; he will not die of old age and could survive the sinking of the Crow's Song into the spore seas. [7] Ulaam uses some kind of Connection to translate his thoughts into the local language. [6]
