The Vanishers would first stop the target train by obstructing its tracks.{{book ref|mb4|3}} This always occurred at a position where the rail line came close to the canal it was built next to.{{book ref|mb4|11}} Earlier robberies accomplished this with a fallen tree, later they employed a ghostly train coming the opposite direction.{{book ref|mb4|3}} That particular illusion relied on a hand-powered train carriage with a wooden train engine facade and a powerful light attached. This light may have been battery powered. [[Mist]]s helped obscure the fake engine to aid the illusion. Miles is prosecuted by [[Daius]] and Marasi and sentenced to death. His metalminds are forcibly removed from him and he is killed by a firing squad. Wax finds Suit, who is his uncle Edwarn. Edwarn reveals that the stolen goods were only temporarily stolen to defraud House Tekiel so that the Set could purchase shares in them. He intends to return the goods once the operation is complete.
